My response to this is VERY late...my apologies.

But I do have some thoughts I'd like to share. First, this is intended to be funny, right? I hope so, because it doesn't reflect my life or that of most unemployed people.

Being able to pamper oneself often requires money, which usually means having a steady income, which means having some kind of job.

While I'm able to afford the occasional manicure or a little extra sumthin sumthin, I generally can't afford to "pamper" myself the way I want to. I don't go shopping anymore. I don't visit beauty salons anymore. I have to limit myself to a very strict budget because having no job typically means I'm flat broke.

I have never been on welfare, nor have I ever accepted handouts from the government. No disrespect to those that receive unemployment or government assistance...I'm simply stating what my life is like as a person without a job.

Sometimes watching TV and surfing the Internet is all an unemployed person can do to keep from collapsing further into depression and hopelessness, especially when there don't seem to be any job prospects in sight.

I've never had a spa weekend. I believe this is true of most unemployed folks as well. I also don't blame President Obama for things being the way they are. There is only so much he can do to improve the situation.

Sometimes my husband takes me to nice restaurants and we go on trips once in a while. I've learned to silence the voice that says it is "undeserved". I don't believe that only people with jobs should be allowed to have fun and happiness in their lives, while unemployed people should suffer. I'm not unemployed by choice and I don't take advantage of others. I try to make the best of my situation, although I have many moments where I am deeply unhappy with the way my life has turned out.

Anyway, I apologize if this came off as a rant...that wasn't my intention. I just have a problem with the notion of "funemployment" because most of the time, it really isn't fun. I hate being broke and having no money of my own. I hate being unable to get a good job because of my disability. I hate feeling like a burden to others because society links a person's social status to what they do for a living, instead of who they are.

I'm sorry for whining. :(

Thank you for doing this site. You can give a voice to those unemployed and still have some humor left. It feels good to laugh at one's perdicament. I really believe that all these quiet hands and busy minds will become employed and directed to a better way of life. When it will happen? I wish I knew!

You have a very nice gift of writing, Jacque. That really is sad. I've been trying hard to work on ways to get the world out of this mess. Mostly because I personally hate it. But I do hate how some people are suffering. Like the children. Why must they, already cursed by being born, also have to suffer this tragedy of society? Why are all the people out there stupid? To me, they are... I'm dumb too though. I hope everything gets better for you, and the world as a whole. Wait. I mean me. o.o. And the world. It's gotta be a better world for me to be happy. Oh, and if you haven't started already, you should start growing your own food, if possible. Knowledge is power. I don't suggest going to college for one of their standard degrees though.

I absolutely LOVED this post! It is so absolutely true that once you are unemployed for a time (as for me, it is now 10 months)you don't bother to get out of your PJ's unless you have to go somewhere! Being a woman, I shudder at the thought of actually wearing heals and a bra for 8 hours! If I were to land a job, it would be so uncomfortable to be "dressed." I have a closet full of 'buisness casual' clothes, shoes, scarfs, hose etc., but the thought of the bra and heels makes me squirm.

Who the hell do all of you self righteous people think you are? I have worked for 35 years, raised two children alone w/o child support and raising a grandchild w/o child support, graduated from college, done countless hours of volunteer work for animal welfare groups, personally taken care of underpriveledged families, bought christmas gifts for children who would not have gotten anything, purchased groceries for families out of work out of my own pocket countless times, paid taxes and recently fell on hard times and had to apply for food stamps! I will purchase whatever I like with them and don't really give a damn what any of you think!! The program is there for people like me who need it temporarily while getting back on their feet! I would sure like to know who the hell gets 500a month to sit in a trailor and smoke pot cause I get less than 200 a month. Oh and I agree with the person who said your taxes are lining the politicians pockets, I have nothing to be ashamed of even If I choose to buy soda and oreos!! I also buy food for meals but I feel like my kid deserves a treat occasionally!! And half of you posting hateful things about us on foodstamps are probably cheating on your taxes anyway!!!!!

I agree, not everyone in this country has lost their jobs due to a fault of their own. My husband was working hard at the same job for three years, we were house shopping. Our dream was about to come true! Then just like that the plant shut the doors and we are out of luck.

I came online today to see if Trader Joe's accepted snap benefits formerly called food stamps. I have been on food stamps for a few years now, because I am unable to find employment. My position at my former company was eliminated after a company merger, and I haven't worked a full time permanent position since. I since have gone back to school to complete my bachelor's degree and will be finished at the end of the year. Does my degree guarantee that I will be able to find a job to support my two young children? NO! Does my educational level, my ability to work, my skill set, my desire to return to the workforce, or the 60 job applications that I put in at minimum per week mean that I will get a job and be able to get off of assistance? Hell NO!!! But guess what my children and I still need to eat so that we can try again tomorrow to get out of the rut we are in today. I am offended by individuals that feel they have the right to judge another persons lifestyle. I have gained 40+ lbs since being unemployed, and NOT because I use my foodstamps to buy junk food, but because of the depressing situation that my family is in. I ate healthy before I lost my job and that included what many people consider luxury items and I used my hard earned dollars to buy those items. But guess where else my hard earned money went... into to taxes to pay into the system that is benefiting my family and many others that are in similar situations. I don't abuse the help that my family receives but I refuse to feed foods that offer little to no nutritional value to my family, in order to appease those that believe because we need a little help right now we should eat ramen noodles and spaghetti O's. So I am glad that Trader Joe's accepts SNAP benefits and I will use mine there to offer nutritional meals to my family and we will still be eating there when we get off of assistance too.

@lisa
Good for you that you know Spanish, but it doesn't make you smarter than someone who took another language(s) in high school/college (FYI, some languages are more difficult to learn as well). The racist comment was both ridiculous and uncalled for. If you to think that people should only be forced to learn one language of one people group that migrates to the US (there are 6500 languages in the world), you are the one with the problem. For example, Vietnamese is another common language in the US, but they are not accommodated like Spanish speakers are. What if someone decided to fire you because you don't speak Vietnamese, and you complained, and they responded by calling you a racist? Adding insult to injury is what comes to mind.
