guest-list-plus-one-1In addition to dating for dinner and crashing weddings, the unemployed also love being a perpetual plus one. Getting to go out on someone else’s dime is an occasion for the unemployed to get dressed up and attempt to have a social life. While all events don’t always necessarily equal free food and drinks, the perpetually single friend who breathes a sigh of relief to see the +1 on an invitation will usually pay for some or all of the evening, just because he or she is thankful to have a date.

Because the unemployed will always have that friend who will only call up when their intended date cancels, the unemployed have to be proactive in getting added as a plus one. Sometimes they’ll be shameless about it and hit up acquaintances they know who might be in “the industry” in the off chance that he or she might have a hot ticket to a record release party, a movie screening, a wine tasting, or a sports game. If said person reveals an upcoming event, the unemployed will have no qualms about digging around to find out if they can be their plus one, and will always try to finagle their way in even if the plus one has been filled. After trying to cajole the industry connection into ditching his or her significant in hopes of getting added as the replacement, the unemployed will eventually come up with a tried and true method: showing up early to an event, announcing that they’re “So and so’s” plus one, and merrily settle in before the confusion mounts outside when the intended plus one is denied at the door.
