Every once in a while it just feels good to have a 90s flashback day and listen to the hot tunes that decade had to offer. Amongst them is the nice little diddy “Why Don’t You Get A Job?” by The Offspring. Of course the lyrics might seem taboo these days but there’s just something about the upbeat tune about deadbeats that make the unemployed people go, “Yeah, this is my jam!” Sure, the song is basically taking a stand against people who expect money for doing nothing all day, but when collecting unemployment checks from the government the jobless just laugh about the glorious life they’re living.
Key lyrics that every unemployed person identifies with:
- But she wants more dinero just to sit at home
- I guess all his money well it isn’t enough, ’cause that girl’s got expensive taste
- Well I guess it ain’t easy doing nothing at all, oh yeah
- But hey man free rides just don’t come along every day
For starters, who doesn’t want more money just to sit at home? That’s why unemployment’s a dream. Sure, the unemployed aren’t making as much money as they used to be, but for the most part getting free money for doing nothing is pretty great, at least for a while. Just because someone’s unemployed doesn’t mean they have to give up all the comforts of having money – that’s why they turn to using food stamps on gourmet food or other means of scamming the government for more money to supplement their lavish lifestyles. The Offspring hits the nail on the head when they sing about it not being easy doing nothing at all because there is some angst associated with being unemployed and stir crazy, but that’s generally cured when an unemployment check arrives in the mail. Where they err, on the other hand, is “free rides don’t come along every day” because they do – every day more and more people are getting laid off, and if that’s not a free ride, what is? It’s a pretty great song, and the next time someone tells you to go get a job, say no way, say no way.
