standing-in-line-for-free-food-bread-lineGood thing most of us grew up with pictures from the Great Depression depicting hundreds of out-of-work Americans standing for hours in bread lines awaiting free government handouts. Otherwise, there might be some sort of stigma associated with today’s unemployed people who voluntarily line up for free food, regardless of what it is because they can’t turn down a good deal. And when something’s free, it’s all good.

Free anything has massive appeal regardless of whether someone’s employed. The only difference between the employed and unemployed when it comes to taking advantage of a free meal is people without jobs have all the time in the world to wait in line. In fact, they’re happy to patiently stand in line as a gesture to indicate how appreciative they are for a) getting a free meal and b) having something to do, even if it’s just waiting in line for free food. Free is nice, but it comes with a price – time that employed people generally just don’t have. The unemployed, on the other hand, have nothing but time to wait for food even though they suspect it might not be the highest quality because they can see the restaurant employees scrambling to accommodate the hoards of hungry unemployed people.

Next time you hear about Denny’s Grand Slam Giveaway, KFC’s Free Grilled Chicken Day, or El Pollo Loco’s Taste the Fire promotion, be sure to make a mental note to attend. You’ll be surprised to find a line when you show up to whatever establishment is doling out free food, at any point of the day. Logically, you might try to get there before lunch hour or after the lunch rush, to minimize line standing time. The thought is 11am to 2pm is typically when you’d see people in business casual lining up, joking about how they don’t need a free meal, they just happened to want that particular food that day. However you’ll find all sorts of unemployed people in all shapes and ages, ranging from regular retirees, recently laid off folk who still make an effort at life, and guys in sweats who don’t about anything except eating for free then shamelessly getting back in line for another round. Those guys are to be respected because they’re not ashamed to wait around for a couple pieces of chicken. If it’s free, they’ll take it and at the end of the day, it leaves more government money on the table for other things. Like drinking. There’s no way like the American way. The picture says so.

Free anything has massive appeal regardless of whether someone’s employed. -TRUE. I guess it’s just more appealing and less shameful (for lack of a better term) when you’re out of a job.
