For those who are unemployed and actually looking for a job, one of the best ways to get oneself out there is to attend various unemployment parties or get-togethers with a bunch of other unemployed folk. Whether they’re pink slip parties, conferences for laid off people, or casual bar gatherings, the unemployed love having an excuse to get out of the house and get dressed in clothing not made of sweat material.
The reason unemployed people go to these sorts of unemployment gatherings is because they’ve either gotten to the point of taking drastic measures to find a job and want to proudly announce they’re unemployed and looking along with hundreds of equally desperate competitors. Or they go because these parties often involve free food, booze, and banal advice on how to get their work life back on track – which makes them run to the open bar. The latter tends to attract those who aren’t interested in finding a job but would like to stretch their unemployment checks by eating for free.
Oftentimes people will use unemployment parties as an excuse to entertain themselves as several of their former colleagues join the unemployment ranks. Although they know they should never feel good about someone else’s misfortune, sometimes seeing that jerk who always got the client in a somewhat ill-fitting suit (thanks to unemployment weight gain) is enough to warm the heart. Attending the events puts things in perspective, especially when old bosses, nemeses, and people who should have been fired long ago aimlessly roam the convention halls. With a full belly and veins coursing with free alcohol, it’s all the disinterested job seeker can do from laughing at the people who think more can be gained from these unemployment parties beyond having something to do besides sitting on the couch all day. With a shake of the head, and a cup full of booze, the more knowledgeable unemployed will take solace in knowing it won’t be long before everyone else gives up too.

lol.. I haven’t heard of an unemployment party. Seems like fun, and at least people will get out of the house, talk to people in similar situations, and get free food (or sometimes booze, haha). People just gotta be sure not to have TOO MUCH fun–they gotta get back on track some time.
ouch.
goodbye
we had one of those when my old company went bust it was kinda depressing
The best thing about unemployment parties, as opposed to office parties, is you can act an ass in front of these people and there are no longer repercussions such as the next-day-at-work embarrassment!
