Just because unemployment causes people to sleep however much they want, read plentiful books, play awesome video games, and have ample time to do whatever they wish doesn’t mean unemployed people don’t have problems too. When staring at the computer, TV, and blank walls proves to be too much to handle, there’s nothing unemployed people want more than to just get away from it all. “It” oftentimes being the stress brought on from being judged by themselves, friends, or republicans for being unemployed.
At times, the unemployed can brush off the feeling because they can justify to themselves that if they just ride out the recession, they can continue to be guilt-free about sucking the government dry one check at a time. When they can’t, that’s when the unemployed start figuring out how they can hide for a little bit and try to forget they’re jobless and aimless either by choice or as dictated by this “economic downturn” that’s so unforgiving. That could involve pouring everything they’ve got into projects so they can avoid living life for that much longer. Or, they could build a log cabin in the secluded woods and spend time writing some insane manifesto.
Realistically, the unemployed could get away from it all by doing something as simple as camping, taking a short road trip, or flying to explore some destination that has been at the back of their heads for a while. All it takes is some alone time away from the familiar things that trigger feelings of failure, such as a computer with no return emails regarding jobs. After a few days of rest and relaxation, the unemployed can go back to reality and let the judgement roll off their backs. Now is as good a time as any to take some time off to rebuild – after all, for many who were trapped in hated jobs, this is the opportunity to find something they’re passionate about before jumping into the workforce again. But until that happens, if the urge to escape rises, by all means, go, because seriously, when else is the government going to pay for your mini crisis vacation?

Great timing! I’m going camping tomorrow for the first time, as it happens. However, I don’t know how escapist it will really be. I can’t help but think of it as a dress rehearsal for living in a tent city. Or perhaps the long drive cross-country to move back in with my parents.
SUPL is my favorite site, because it tells me I’m not alone and helps me find humor in my situation. It is my unemployment version of Dilbert, which was so similar to my work life that people thought I wrote it in my spare time.
