Unemployed people aren’t the only ones guilty of overusing the phrase “in this economy” or others such as “in these difficult economic times” and “during this global economic downturn.” Rich politicians will abuse the phrases to sound like they’re one with the people. Fearfully employed people will use them when fretting about losing their jobs. And nagging wives and husbands all over will cite the “ongoing financial crisis” when shooting down attempts to buy “frivolous” items such as a new car or plastic surgery. There should be a mandate that only unemployed people are allowed to use the phrases if used sarcastically.
Sure, times are tough, but it’s as if the world has been brainwashed to respond to everything as if every move will lead to some catastrophic economic implosion. Everywhere you go, billboards and TV commercials will bombard you with messages reminding you the world is falling apart, as if you weren’t already aware something pretty serious is happening.
Yes, it does make sense to do things to minimize spending where you can and be aware of the global economy, but do people have to be robots about the situation?
Rihanna: I’m going to run to the store and pick up some milk and eggs.
Chris Brown: In this economy?!
Rihanna: Please don’t hit me.Nadya Suleman: I’m going to impregnate myself with a bajillion embryos in hopes of having more octoplets.
Michael Jackson: During these difficult economic times?! Okay!Patrick Swayze: I’m going in for another round of chemo.
Patrick Swayze’s Wife: You do realize there’s a recession going on, right?!
Unless you have a real reason to panic, life isn’t as bad as the media plays it out to be. Remember, not too long ago they had you freaking out about a miracle plane landing in the Hudson River, salmonella in peanut butter, and crazy chimps named Travis. So stop reading the news and freaking out and stop using cliche financial phrases you don’t quite understand. Leave them for people actually affected by this “economic crisis.”
